Oh-Uh & Joint Popping

Kayla has a new word. She came in the kitchen this morning saying "oh-uh, oh-uh, oh-uh". Huh? Then "EEEEE oh-uh, EEEEE oh-uh". Know what she wanted? DONUTS! Gah. Chocolate ones, of course, she wasn't interested in the powdered sugar ones, even though she kept pulling them off the counter (the chocolate ones are in the fridge). We don't usually even have donuts in the house, but there was a sale at the supermarket, so we got them as a treat. Now we have donut monster!

Kayla's PT called the other day about how Kayla "pops" her knees or ankles when she is upset. She does it a lot during yoga. (I guess Kayla doesn't like yoga. Isn't yoga supposed to be relaxing?) I hate using the phrase "Down syndrome things", but isn't that just one of those Down syndrome things? Joint laxity due to loose ligaments and all that? Aside from some mentions about AAI and hip subluxation, I really couldn't find any information about how detrimental this is.

Does anyone else's kid pop their joints? Is it just a behavioral thing or is it something that needs to be seen by a specialist?

Donuts make me say Uh-Oh, too.

Foster's joints are very lax, too, but he doesn't intentionally pop them. I can see that yoga would be hard for him with those lax joints, and that he would do something to distract himself if we tried to "torture" him with yoga.

If I tell you what I hear about low-tone ALL THE TIME, you would want to punch me. Trust me.

Aiden pops his hips. When we went to his ortho, the ortho wasn't concerned as long as Aiden wasn't popping his hips out of joint.

Nope- never heard of popping joints. Kayli has loose ones for sure and occasional knee? pain to prove it but no popping. Love the new word!

News to me. As a behavior.

In general (not specific to any diagnosis) popping joints is not known to be damaging despite legend that it does. I posted on this last year but the post title does not come to mind. (Sorry.)

Your PT said this to you as if it was bad? Did you question her further? Barbara
